RNC Naturalist Series

Adult Program

(No classes in December)

If you are curious about natural communities, how they work, and the plants and animals that live in them, this course is for you. Visit www.riveredge.us for details.  Fee: $30 per full day programs and $15 for half day programs. Call to register for individual classes or the entire course (some discounts apply if you sign up for the entire course). Topics for November include:

·          11/1 – Forest Ecology: Learn about the succession process of forests and the interactions of different types of vegetation and organisms that inhibit forest ecosystems.  (Full Day)

·          11/17 – Soils of Wisconsin: Learn about the importance of soils, what soil is composed of, and what the soil can teach us about an ecosystem,.  (Half Day)

Bird Club

Lake Michigan Stopover Habitats:  A birds-eye view of conservation measures

Tuesday, November 6, 7pm Program

Kim Grveles outlines the major features surrounding stopover habitats, what is being done in Wisconsin to protect these often critical places near Lake Michigan, and how all of us can contribute to this important effort.

Riveredge Silent Sports: Glacial Landform Loop Run/Hike

Adults and Children 12 and Up

Saturday, November 10, 1-2:30pm

Join us for a hike or a run through the “hills and valleys” of Riveredge and discover that you are actually traveling upon glacial landforms! On our journey, we will visit a moraine, a kettle, a kame and an esker. It’s amazing to think that the landforms left behind when the glaciers retreated 10,000 years ago bring beauty and variety to our outdoor workouts today! Meet at the Visitors’ Center.

Nature Detectives: Environmental Education for children ages 6-12, adults welcome

Learn About Leaves

Come unravel the mystery of why leaves change color in the fall.  Discover the amazing variety of leaves at Riveredge as we gather some on our hike through the forest.  Craft a mobile to take home as a reminder of your autumn adventure.  Pre-registration suggested.

Phenology Walk

Adult Program at Riveredge

Friday, November 16, 1:00-2:30pm
Walk (or snowshoe) with Mandie Zopp, Riveredge’s Senior Naturalist, and become acquainted with the seasonal changes occurring throughout the sanctuary.  We will record our sightings of animals, plants, and other critters during our walk.  Feel free to bring a journal, camera, and binoculars.  Ages 12 and Up.  Fee: Free

 

Handmade for the Holidays

Family Program

Saturday, November 17, 1-3:30pm

Our trails are closed for the hunting season, but our doors are open to families for a day of creativity and gift making. Children of all ages can make seasonal gifts including: wood working, card making, food projects, textiles and ornaments. Outpost Natural Foods Cooperative is donating yummy ingredients so children can assemble gift jars of a delicious treat! Each child can make and take home multiple projects. Hot chocolate, coffee and popcorn will be served.  Pre-registration suggested.

Fee: $15 per child, Member: $12 per child

 Morels to Maitake: the Edible Wild Mushrooms of Wisconsin

Science for Everyone Lecture Series

Tuesday, November 20, 7pm at Riveredge Nature Center

Wisconsin is renowned nationally as a hotspot for edible wild mushrooms. This lecture, with gorgeous slides, is meant for all audiences and will take a look at the edible mushrooms of Wisconsin, from summer through fall and beyond.  Tips on how to identify, when to be cautious, as well as preparation and preservation will be offered. Dr. Britt Bunyard is the founder, Publisher, and Editor in Chief of the mycology journal Fungi which has the largest circulation of any mycological publication in North America.

Plants of the Arctic

Science for Everyone Lecture Series

Tuesday, November 27, 7pm at the Washington County Public Agency Center

This lecture will look at the unique environment and beauty of the Arctic through the lens of the many specially adapted plants which bloom in the intense summer season. Judy Lasca follows the Northeast Passage along the top of Russia, the Northwest Passage across Alaska and Canada, the coasts of Greenland, and touches on Ellesmere Island, Svalbard, and the Franz Josef Islands,  to present an overview of the wide and fascinating array of plants, landscape, and life -- human and animal -- found in some of the most magnificent and remote parts of the globe.

The Photo Club brings together those who enjoy photography and wish to take better pictures through practice.  Held at Riveredge on the last Tuesday of every month.
