MEMBERS ONLY! Yule Log Dinner

Friday and Saturday, December 7 & 8, 2012 from 5:30-8:30pm

Join the annual celebration that marks the winter solstice and beginning of the holiday season.  After enjoying a home cooked stew made over an open fire, families search with candle-lit lanterns for the Yule Log, hidden homewhere in the Riveredge sanctuary.  Seasonal music, refreshments and sharing of potluck items make this a true Riveredge family event.  Last names A-M please bring a dessert, N-Z please bring a bread item to share.  Dress for the weather.  Registration and pre-payment are required.  All attendees must be members.  Space is limited.  Call 262-375-2715 to reserve your spot.   Fee: Adult $12,  Child $5, 3 & Under Free

 

Annual Christmas Bird Count

Saturday, December 15, 2012 from Dawn to Dusk

(come for all or part of the day)

Looking for a new holiday tradition?  Why not spend a wonderful winter day with fellow birders counting our fine-feathered friends. There are two ways to participate; you can be either a field or feeder counter.  No experience is necessary.  All counters are invited to join us back at the barn to compile data, swap stories and enjoy a potluck dinner.  For more information contact Mary Holleback via phone or email at maryh@riveredge.us.  Fee: Free

      

Exploring Winter Birds

Saturday, December 1, 1:00-2:30pm

Explore the RNC sanctuary with Riveredge’s Senior Naturalist, Mandie Zopp, to discover some of the common birds that reside in Wisconsin throughout the winter months.  If the trails are snow-covered, we will be snowshoeing (Call Riveredge for our snowshoe rental policy); however, if the trails are bare, we will hike.  Please call ahead of time to register and to verify if we will be snowshoeing or hiking.

Fee:  Free (exception: snowshoe rental)

Phenology Walk

Adult Program at Riveredge

Friday, December 7 & 21, 1:00-2:30pm
Walk (or snowshoe) with Mandie Zopp, Riveredge’s Senior Naturalist, and become acquainted with the seasonal changes occurring throughout the sanctuary.  We will record our sightings of animals, plants, and other critters during our walk.  Feel free to bring a journal, camera, and binoculars.  Ages 12 and Up.  Fee: Free

Making Treats for the Birds

Family Program

Sunday, December 9, 2012, 1:00-2:30pm

Create a variety of bird treats for your feathered friends! We’ll supply the materials to help the birds in your yard stay well-fed through winter. Pre-registration is suggested.

Riveredge Silent Sports: Winter Solstice Ski

Adults and Children 12 and Up

Saturday, December 15, 1-2:30pm

Come celebrate an early Winter Solstice!  If the trails are snow-covered, we will enjoy a beautiful route through the sparkling forests and fields of Riveredge. If the trails are bare, we will take in the crisp winter air sans skies. Either way, it will be the perfect way to greet the new season! Meet at the Visitors’ Center.

Photo Club

Tuesday, December 18, 7pm

The Photo Club brings together those who enjoy photography and wish to take better pictures through practice.  Held at Riveredge on the last Tuesday of every month.

Holiday Snowshoe Hike

Family Program

Thursday, December 27, 1-3pm

Bring the whole family to explore Riveredge’s winter wonderland.  The hike will either be on foot or snowshoes, depending on snow depth.  Pre-registration suggested.  Snowshoe supply is limited so register early.

Fee: Adult $7, 12 & under $5
