Facility Information

 

Riveredge Nature Center was one of the first and today is one of the largest nature centers in southeastern Wisconsin. It consists of 379 acres of natural sanctuary – prairies, forests, ponds and marshes along the Milwaukee River.  Along with the property, Riveredge's educational programs are supported by various buildings, which are also available to rent for parties, weddings, mettings and other uses.

The Riveredge sanctuary includes:

  • 10 miles of trails (6 groomed and tracked for cross-country skiing)
  • A vernal pond and creek, both designated as state natural areas
  • One and one-half miles of river frontage
  • Seven deciduous forest types
  • Engineered Wetland Wastewater Treatment System
  • Wet meadows
  • 28 acres of planted prairie
  • Fen
  • Five ponds
  • 186 species of birds
  • 580+ species of plants
  • 26 species of mammals
  • 7 species of anurans
  • 23 soil types
  • Plus many special, quiet spots

The Riveredge Visitor Center is a 11,000 square foot facility constructed in 1990. It includes:

Arboretum

  • Geothermal heat
  • Classrooms/labs
  • Library
  • Administrative offices
  • Interpretive area, visitor center
  • Research area

 

The Riveredge Barn was built in the 19th century and renovated in 1970s. It includes:

  • Large meeting area
  • Modern kitchen
  • Spacious decks
  • Adjourning grassy area
  • Prairie garden
The Coop is a small renovated chicken coop heated by a wood stove the offers beautiful views of the bird feeding station.
