OFFSHORE LAKE MICHIGAN WATERFOWL AND WATERBIRDS: WHAT WE'RE LEARNING
Tuesday, January 8, 7pm
Bill Mueller provides an update on what the Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory's offshore aerial surveys along the western shore of Lake Michigan are discovering.
Learn the results of ongoing research surveys of Lake Michigan offshore waterfowl and waterbirds - these have been over the past 2 1/2 years, by the Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory. This presentation features recent GIS and mapping work done by our colleague and partner Anne Reis, of Milwaukee's Urban Ecology Center, along with elements of an accompanying UW-Milwaukee senior undergrad study done by our intern Andrew Limmer.

The Purple Martin is one of North America's most beloved songbirds. It is known for its skillful aerial exhibitions, tolerance of humans, and pleasant twittering call. Humans have long sought to attract Purple Martins, but as Noel Cutright highlights, the martin is experiencing a population decline.

Radar ornithology has provided tools for studying movement of birds, especially related to migration. Radar shows where birds are moving, in what direction, and estimates how many are aloft. David LaPuma illustrates how this fascinating tool works and what we are learning about bird migration.

The Riveredge Bird Club held its first meeting in March 1986. The Club brings together those who enjoy observing and learning more about birds and sharing these interest with others. All activities are free and open to the public. Attend a meeting or field trip to become a member and receive the bimonthly newsletter.
