Stay warm on this wintry stroll with good company and a glass of wine (for ages 21+) \nThe Wine Bar and campfire will be located at the Coop and will be featured on the Trail Map that you will receive when you check in at the Front Desk. SUMMARY:OWBC: Year-round movements of Rough-legged Hawks wintering in WI
DESCRIPTION:January 8 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm\n              \n                  Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition: Year-round movements of Rough-legged Hawks wintering in WI \n              \n              The OWBC is partnering with the Southern WI Bird Alliance to offer this program. From 2021-2022\, nine GPS transmitters were attached to wintering Rough-legged Hawks in Wisconsin. Many of these transmitters are still functioning and have provided multiple years of full annual cycle movements. Come learn about the year-round movements of Rough-legged Hawks wintering in the great state of Wisconsin\, and how these nine birds fit into the broader Rough-legged Hawk Project that has tracked nearly 200 hawks throughout North America. \nNeil Paprocki recently completed his PhD at the University of Idaho studying differential migration in birds. Take in the beauty and serenity of a crisp winter evening on a self-guided 1.5 mile illuminated trail – a great adventure for both grownups and children. Traverse our trails on skis\, snowshoes (6+ inches of snow)\, or your own two feet. A warm fire and hot cocoa will be awaiting you when you return. \nEmbark on a journey of cosmic discovery with our Stargazing Scavenger Hunt! This unique experience blends the excitement of a traditional scavenger hunt with the magic of stargazing\, creating a night filled with discovery and awe-inspiring celestial wonders. As you hike the luminary trail\, use clues to identify specific celestial landmarks in the night sky. Stop at telescope stations along the way to get a closer look at the cosmos. Astronomy Guides will be on hand to provide assistance and share interesting facts about the astronomical wonders under observation. Binoculars encouraged! Headlamps\, especially those with a red light\, recommended! \nIf the sky is cloudy\, astronomer Jim Hahn will provide an hour-long presentation called “The Sun’s Place in Space.” What occupies the space in our little corner of the Milky Way galaxy? How have we discovered and established distances to our neighbors? Join us as we explore the Sun’s neighborhood\, covering concepts like light-time and stellar evolution along the way. Afterward\, participants can experience our solar system with the “Journey Through the Cosmos: Planetary Walk.” This self-guided experience invites participants to explore the relative distances between planets in our celestial neighborhood through a scaled model walk\, providing an engaging and educational adventure for all ages. \nSnowshoe rental is available ($10/hour for non-members and FREE for Members). The first half of the morning will be spent indoors reviewing a large collection of freshly cut live specimens by fruit\, bud\, twig\, branch\, bark\, and trunk.
