OWBC Field Trip: Owl Prowl at the Cedarburg Bog – FREE

November 14 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Field Trip Owl Prowl at the Cedarburg Bog

Join the Cedarburg Bog Owl Prowl team as we search for owls. We will be looking for Barred, Great-Horned, Northern Saw-whet, and Eastern Screech-Owls for sure and maybe a rare species such as Long-eared Owl. There are no guarantees as owls can be fickle; however, we have never struck out when weather conditions are right! Dress warm and bring binoculars, water, and a small flashlight. We will mostly be owling along Blue Goose and St. Augustine Road with short forays into the woods and/or the Bog itself. We will be standing in place for extended periods so dress warm with good walking shoes or boots. You may want to eat a snack or early dinner before arrival. If there are strong winds, heavy precipitation, and/or severe temperatures, this outing may be postponed. We will let you know in the afternoon by email if there is a postponement. Check your email in afternoon in case of postponement.

Meet at the UWM Field Station in Saukville (address below).

Recommended for ages 10+ (youth must be accompanied by an adult) and is free to attend.
Pre-registration is required.

OWBC field trip – Bird Banding Demo @ Mequon Nature Preserve – FREE

September 13 @ 7:00 am – 11:00 am

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Bird Banding Demo at Mequon Nature Preserve

Have you ever wondered how birds are studied? While birds are relatively easy to observe in the natural world, there is only so much that can be seen through a pair of your favorite binoculars. Bird banding allows for an up-close look at individuals and species and gives a glimpse into breeding, migration, age and health that would otherwise be difficult to study from afar. Join licensed master banders and MNP staff as they demonstrate songbird capturing and banding techniques and how birds are examined and what that information can tell us. Get an up-close look at species utilizing MNP for breeding and migration stop over. The demonstration will take place in Harvey’s Woods, on the west side of the preserve. This event is weather dependent for the safety of the birds.

Recommended for ages 8+ (youth must be accompanied by an adult) and is free to attend.

Pre-registration is required.

OWBC meeting – Mystery of Migration with Bill Volkert – FREE

September 10 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Mystery of Migration with Bill Volkert at Mequon Nature Preserve & on Zoom

One of the most fascinating aspects of the lives of birds is their ability to migrate thousands of miles as they follow the changing seasons. This presentation will explore the annual migration of birds, their seasonal phenology, and explore recent studies that reveal more information and instill greater wonder over the phenomenon of bird migration. Birds not only come and go with the seasons, but they do so in the same order every year. This program will provide an insight into why birds migrate and the orderly succession of species that arrive in Wisconsin each spring.

OWBC Field Trip: Breeding Season at Horicon Marsh

August 9 @ 6:00 am – 1:00 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Field Trip: Breeding Season at Horicon Marsh

Cutright Bird Club coordinator Carl Schwartz and others will be leading this trip to witness the breeding season and early shorebird migration at Horicon Marsh. Special focus will be on finding any recent eBird rarities as well as sorting through an assortment of recently fledged ducks, rails, herons, bitterns, pelicans, and terns, as well as shorebirds already returning from Arctic breeding grounds. We will be on the lookout for resident Whooping Crane and Black-necked Stilt fledges. We will canvass as many local hotspots as time and weather allow, e.g., Old Marsh Road, Main Dike Road, Ledge Road, the Auto Loop Road, Highway 49, Marsh Haven. Some hiking is likely so wear appropriate footwear and clothing; also bring a water bottle, energy snacks and sunscreen. This trip is sponsored by the Noel J. Cutright Bird Club.

Ages 18+ | Park and meet at 6:00 am at the Park & Ride lot at the intersection of Highway 33 and Interstate 41, just east of Allenton (address below).

OWBC: A Quilting Field Trip Through the Natural World

June 11 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition: A Quilting Field Trip Through the Natural World In-Person and Virtual

Anita Carpenter, a retired pharmacist, has been enthralled with the natural world since childhood. She even returned to UW-Oshkosh to obtain a master’s degree in biology – just for the fun of it. For 30 years, she co-led the UWO Biology Department’s spring break camping field trips. She is a naturalist, nature writer for 40+ years, avid birder and butterflier but is really interested in anything that piques her curiosity. In retirement she volunteers with the UWO grounds crew, monitoring bird houses, documenting nesting, surveying insects, caring for the natural areas and weeding, weeding and more weeding. And in her spare time, she has been an avid quilter for 20 years. These are not your grandmother’s quilts. From the beginning, Anita was inspired to create original, nature-themed, scientifically-correct quilts. Each requires an in-depth look, for they include hidden, often camouflaged, organisms appropriate to the quilt’s theme.
