SUMMARY:OWBC meeting - Mystery of Migration with Bill Volkert - FREE
DESCRIPTION:September 10 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm\n \n Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition \n Mystery of Migration with Bill Volkert \n at Mequon Nature Preserve & on Zoom \n \n One of the most fascinating aspects of the lives of birds is their ability to migrate thousands of miles as they follow the changing seasons. This presentation will explore the annual migration of birds\, their seasonal phenology\, and explore recent studies that reveal more information and instill greater wonder over the phenomenon of bird migration. Birds not only come and go with the seasons\, but they do so in the same order every year. This program will provide an insight into why birds migrate and the orderly succession of species that arrive in Wisconsin each spring. \nAges 18+ \nIn person registration:\nMeet at Mequon Nature Preserve (address below). \nRegister Here \nVirtual registration: \nRegister Here \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n Registration\n In Person \n Register Here\n \n\n \n \n \n Registration\n Virtual \n Register Here\n \n\n \n \n \n Become a Member\n Take advantage of member benefits and discounts! \n Join Now\n \n\n \n \n \n u003cimg src=u0022https://riveredgenaturecenter.org/wp-content/uploMore Eventsads/2021/10/icon-calendar-check.svgu0022 width=u0022100u0022 height=u0022100u0022u003eu003cbru003eMore Events\n Explore other upcoming events! \n Event Calendar

SUMMARY:OWBC: A Quilting Field Trip Through the Natural World
DESCRIPTION:June 11 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm\n \n Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition: A Quilting Field Trip Through the Natural World \n In-Person and Virtual \n \n Anita Carpenter\, a retired pharmacist\, has been enthralled with the natural world since childhood. She even returned to UW-Oshkosh to obtain a master’s degree in biology – just for the fun of it. For 30 years\, she co-led the UWO Biology Department’s spring break camping field trips. She is a naturalist\, nature writer for 40+ years\, avid birder and butterflier but is really interested in anything that piques her curiosity. In retirement she volunteers with the UWO grounds crew\, monitoring bird houses\, documenting nesting\, surveying insects\, caring for the natural areas and weeding\, weeding and more weeding. And in her spare time\, she has been an avid quilter for 20 years. These are not your grandmother’s quilts. From the beginning\, Anita was inspired to create original\, nature-themed\, scientifically-correct quilts. Each requires an in-depth look\, for they include hidden\, often camouflaged\, organisms appropriate to the quilt’s theme. \nAges 18+ | Pre-registration required for those joining in-person.\nIf attending in-person\, please meet at Mequon Nature Preserve (address below). SUMMARY:OWBC: Motus in WI
DESCRIPTION:November 13 @ 7:00 – 8:30 pm\n \n Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition \n Motus in WI \n at MNP & on Zoom \n \n “Motus in Wisconsin: A Big Leap in Wildlife Tracking” by Jacob Woulf \, Motus coordinator for Lake Michigan Bird Observatory \nThe Motus Wildlife Tracking System is a collaborative research effort that uses small radio tags and receiving stations to detect animals (primarily birds) as they move across the landscape. Unlike GPS transmitters that give precise location data\, Motus tags emit a radio signal that can only be detected within a short distance (~9miles) of a Motus tower. Many organisms that carry Motus tags are not large enough for a GPS transmitter; Motus tags are also significantly less expensive than GPS transmitters. Because of their limited detection range\, Motus towers must be strategically placed. Lake Michigan Bird Observatory (LMBO) received a large grant to construct 16 Motus stations along the western shore of Lake Michigan and also is working on a buildout of stations moving westward across the state. \nWoulf graduated from UW-Green Bay in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in animal biology and in 2022 with a master’s degree in environmental science and policy. A recent study revealed that we’ve lost one in four individual birds since 1970. However\, not all species declined\, and some habitats have experienced greater declines than others. Augustine\, explains how this was estimated\, describes trends in the data with respect to species and habitats\, and shares ways you can prevent further losses in your own neighborhood as well as in general. \nThis program is offered in-person and virtually. \nIf joining in person\, meet at Mequon Nature Preserve (address below). \nAges 18+ | Free to attend \nPre-registration required by July 10 at 12:00 pm (noon). \nRegister here   Join on Zoom \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n Registration\n Ages 18+Free to attendIn-person or virtual \n Register Here\n \n\n \n \n \n Become a Member\n Take advantage of member benefits and discounts! \n Join Now\n \n\n \n \n \n More Events\n Explore other upcoming events! \n Event Calendar
