Buckthorn removal is one of the most important steps for restoring the land around us. Because of the expansive reach this plant has\, the forest floor under the buckthorn is almost entirely bare. Removing buckthorn in the winter allows our team to spend less time managing the plant in the spring and summer\, instead working to reintroduce native species in the newly cleared area! \nIf you’re looking for an opportunity to get outside and participate in local conservation efforts\, you’ve come to the right place! Please dress for the elements and prepare to hike off trail. Tools and PPE provided. \nVolunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate. Dr. Jim Reinartz\, president of the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog and former UWM Field Station director will share with you why this designation reflects the Bog’s outstanding ecological importance. It’s the state’s largest and one of the rarest patterned “string bog” which are typically found much further north. It contains southern boreal forest species and provides vital habitat for diverse wildlife. Our knowledgeable guides will share the history and science behind maple sugaring\, making this experience both educational and delicious. Immerse yourselves in the sights\, sounds\, and tastes of this traditional practice\, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and its sweet bounty. Take part in a time-honored Riveredge tradition- a pancake & pickle\, topped with maple syrup produced by the trees you’ve just visited.
