Birding at the Bog!
We will explore the bog in search of birds that call WI winters home! We will practice using binoculars and searching for signs to spot birds. While the sun sets, we will use our “Deer Ears” to listen for our feathered friends, and learn how they adapt to the cold season.
If this spikes your interest in being a citizen scientist, we will have information for you! You could participate for 1-2 hours this year for the Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 17th too!
Meet at the Cedarbug Bog Trail Entrance on Hwy 33 in Saukville.

Overwintering Insects
All insects have strategies to survive winter. Some migrate, like monarch butterflies and dragonflies; others’ overwinter as eggs, pupae, and larvae to continue their species, like grasshoppers; yet, others hibernate, or “diapause”, like ladybugs and wasps. We will read Bugs and Bugsicles and conduct experiments and associate insect life cycles to the seasons to understand how these small creatures survive the Wisconsin winters.
Meet at the Northern Ozaukee School Forest. Trails are gravel and easy for a stroller. Please dress warm for the weather and bring a source of light (lantern, flashlight, or headlamp).
