The Soil Underfoot
with Mary Ann Ihm
Besides being a non-profit education center, Wellspring has been an organic farm for 35 seasons. Mary Ann Ihm, the founder of this 40-year-old organization, has had her fingers in the soil for over 45 years. Sometimes called “the Compost Queen”, she loves to help people learn how to build and enhance the soil. To her, soil is a living community with nutrients that nourish growing plants. Wellspring is a neighbor of Riveredge, just across the river to the north and has partnered with us in the Growing Green program this year.

Winter Constellations
with Scott Nehring
Get on board as we take a journey through the Winter sky. We’ll begin with the constellation Orion to talk about his belt and nebula. From there we will star hop our way to Taurus to visit Aldebaran. We’ll then journey over to the Pleiades and talk a bit about its history and myths. From there we shoot out to Andromeda. Some 3 million light years away, it is the furthest we can see with the unaided eye. Then move on to Pegasus to visit the Great Square. At this point we’ll zoom back towards Earth making a quick stop at Sirius, the brightest star in the Northern Hemisphere, some 7 light years distant. Upon our return to Earth, we’ll spend some time learning about the James Webb telescope, as well as the new Moon rocket (Artemis) that NASA is about to launch into Lunar orbit. Hope you can join the tour.
This program will be available in person at Riveredge AND virtually on Zoom.

Tea & Topics: Lizard Mounds & the Ancient Effigy Mounds of WI
with Bob Birmingham
Join historian, Bob Birmingham in person or on Zoom, to learn more about Lizard Mound State Park. The 22-acre site was designated Wisconsin’s newest state park in April, 2022. It contains 28 Native American effigy mounds which were built by Late Woodland tribes from 800 – 1,500 years ago. The earthen sculptures were built to resemble spirits or animals and were generally used for burying the dead. Bring your questions and your lunch if you’d like for this live & on Zoom program about a park worth visiting.

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition
Tune In: Birding by Ear
Tune In! Just as it sounds…pun intended. Join DNR wildlife educator, Liz Herzmann, to practice identifying birds by their song. We all know birds can be beautiful by sight, but have you ever really taken the time to learn their songs and calls? Whose call sounds like “cheeseburger” or “drink your tea”? Each species has unique sounds that make identifying birds by ear a unique and challenging way to birdwatch. Many expert birders do not even need a pair of binoculars as they can identify nearly all bird species by ear. Learn about the difference between songs and calls, what to listen for and test your own skills. This program is great for all skill levels and will be a perfect way to prepare for the upcoming spring season as the birds begin calling!
