Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Meeting: Effective Ways to Prevent Bird Window Strikes

Window collisions are a leading cause of bird mortality, killing more than 1 billion birds annually in the U.S. and Canada. Nearly half of fatal bird collisions in the U.S. occur at residences of three stories or less. Chuck Hagner, author of American Birding Association FieldGuide to Birds of Wisconsin, will describe effective, available products that keep birds from striking windows and discuss lessons learned while volunteering with the Wisconsin Night Guardians for Songbirds program and working to get Shorewood to include bird-friendly design in its commercial zoning code and install DarkSky-compliant streetlights on its streets. Bird lovers are more motivated to take action to prevent birds from colliding with their windows by messages that emphasize the effectiveness of those measures, a new Cornell Lab of Ornithology study has found. Chuck is the former editor of BirdWatching magazine and former board chair at the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory.
