OWBC Field Trip: Owl Prowl at the Cedarburg Bog – FREE

November 14 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Field Trip Owl Prowl at the Cedarburg Bog

Join the Cedarburg Bog Owl Prowl team as we search for owls. We will be looking for Barred, Great-Horned, Northern Saw-whet, and Eastern Screech-Owls for sure and maybe a rare species such as Long-eared Owl. There are no guarantees as owls can be fickle; however, we have never struck out when weather conditions are right! Dress warm and bring binoculars, water, and a small flashlight. We will mostly be owling along Blue Goose and St. Augustine Road with short forays into the woods and/or the Bog itself. We will be standing in place for extended periods so dress warm with good walking shoes or boots. You may want to eat a snack or early dinner before arrival. If there are strong winds, heavy precipitation, and/or severe temperatures, this outing may be postponed. We will let you know in the afternoon by email if there is a postponement. Check your email in afternoon in case of postponement.

Meet at the UWM Field Station in Saukville (address below).

Recommended for ages 10+ (youth must be accompanied by an adult) and is free to attend.
Pre-registration is required.

OWBC field trip – Bird Banding Demo @ Mequon Nature Preserve – FREE

September 13 @ 7:00 am – 11:00 am

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Bird Banding Demo at Mequon Nature Preserve

Have you ever wondered how birds are studied? While birds are relatively easy to observe in the natural world, there is only so much that can be seen through a pair of your favorite binoculars. Bird banding allows for an up-close look at individuals and species and gives a glimpse into breeding, migration, age and health that would otherwise be difficult to study from afar. Join licensed master banders and MNP staff as they demonstrate songbird capturing and banding techniques and how birds are examined and what that information can tell us. Get an up-close look at species utilizing MNP for breeding and migration stop over. The demonstration will take place in Harvey’s Woods, on the west side of the preserve. This event is weather dependent for the safety of the birds.

Recommended for ages 8+ (youth must be accompanied by an adult) and is free to attend.

Pre-registration is required.

OWBC meeting – Mystery of Migration with Bill Volkert – FREE

September 10 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Mystery of Migration with Bill Volkert at Mequon Nature Preserve & on Zoom

One of the most fascinating aspects of the lives of birds is their ability to migrate thousands of miles as they follow the changing seasons. This presentation will explore the annual migration of birds, their seasonal phenology, and explore recent studies that reveal more information and instill greater wonder over the phenomenon of bird migration. Birds not only come and go with the seasons, but they do so in the same order every year. This program will provide an insight into why birds migrate and the orderly succession of species that arrive in Wisconsin each spring.

OWBC: Birding in the Cedarburg Bog by Canoe/ Kayak

May 9 @ 6:30 am – 9:00 am

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition: Birding in the Cedarburg Bog by Canoe or Kayak

Mud Lake in the Cedarburg Bog is the largest and least visited lake in Ozaukee County. It furthermore is one of the top birding areas in the county. During this outing, we will explore Mud Lake and its surroundings in search of a true wilderness experience only 20 miles north of a major urban metropolis. We will be looking for late migrants and avian residents uncommon to rare in southeastern Wisconsin, e.g., two bittern species, Alder and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, rails, and waterbirds of every ilk. We will do about 1.5 miles of paddling. This program is being presented by the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog in partnership with the Ozaukee Washington Birding Coalition.

Canoes will be provided at a $10 rental fee payable at the time of the outing. A limited number of personal kayaks and canoes will be allowed, but only with advance permission. If you have questions or need permission to bring your personal kayak or canoe, contact John O’Donnell at johnodonnell132@gmail.com.

OWBC: Woodcock Wander through the Mequon Nature Preserve

April 16 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition: Woodcock Wander through the Mequon Nature Preserve

Stroll with bird expert Dan Panetti, owner of Wild Birds Ultd in Mequn, in search of the American Woodcock — a secretive species most easily found when engaged in wild aerial courtship displays. Although woodcock technically are a “shorebird,’ they typically are found in woodlands, forest openings, and ephemeral ponds. The diverse habitats of the Mequon Nature Preserve make this an ideal location for observing them. The outing will start at dusk with an informational talk followed by a hike in and around the preserve listening for the “peent” call of the male as he corkscrews from on high to the ground in his distinctive courtship display. Rain date is April 18 in case previous day is unsuitable for people and woodcock.
