Beginner Birding Hike

Curious about birding? Grab binoculars, or borrow a pair, and embark on a beginner birding hike with a Riveredge environmental educator.

We’ll see and hear cool bird species as we traverse the trails, and share tips to help you jumpstart your birding hobby! However, we must offer this hike with a word of caution… once you start birding, it can become a lifelong source of enjoyment and community!

All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
This program is free to attend, but donations are greatly appreciated!

Stroll with a Naturalist: Edible & Medicinal Plants

You don’t need to go far to enjoy some of Wisconsin’s bountiful summer wild edible and medicinal plants. Key summer foraging plants like dandelions, chicory, milkweed buds, and yarrow that can all be found right outside your backdoor and used for teas or topical applications. Take a short walk with a naturalist to learn about other nutrient-rich greens, flavorful herbs, and versatile flowers. Additional aspects of nature will be explored as well.

August is the prime time to see late-summer prairie flowers at Riveredge. Take a stroll with a naturalist to enjoy the vibrant golds, purples, and whites of key prairie species including Blazing Star, Prairie Dock, Black-eyed Susan, various asters and towering grasses like Big Bluestem. Additional aspects of nature will be explored as well.

Did you know that some dragonflies can outmaneuver an airplane, can fly backwards at 35 mph, change directions in mid-air, stop and hover? Hike with a naturalist to search for members of this colorful group of insects. Learn some tips for identifying them and what habitats to look for them in. Other aspects of nature will be explored as well.

Some of the most frequently seen butterflies in Wisconsin include the Monarch, Clouded Sulphur, Mourning Cloak, Red-spotted Purple, and several swallowtail species. Take a casual walk with a naturalist to search for these and many more species of butterflies that can be found at Riveredge. Additional aspects of nature will be explored as well.

There’s no single “most beautiful” bird song, but popular contenders include the complex, flute-like songs of the Wood Thrush, the melodic calls of the Goldfinch, and the varied tunes of the Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Take a casual walk with a naturalist while searching for these and other songsters. Other aspects of nature will be explored as well.

Bluebirds aren’t the only species of birds that use the boxes on Riveredge’s Bluebird Trail. Take a stroll with a naturalist to learn about the other cavity nesters that benefit from the boxes. Additional aspects of nature will be explored as well. These educational programs will give you a better understanding of the flora and fauna of the nature center. You may even learn some of the history of the land too.
