Learn all about Wisconsin ducks with our guest speaker Jeff Bahls, President of the Horicon Marsh Bird club, Wood Duck Society board member and 2018 recipient for the Wisconsin Society of Ornithology bronze Passenger Pigeon award! As an avid birder and duck hunter, Jeff has a wealth of information to share with bird enthusiasts on the life history of some of his favorite duck species, where and when to find them and how to identify them in the field.
This workshop is a two-part series. The first portion will be an indoor lecture-discussion held on-site at Riveredge Nature Center with the option to join virtually over zoom. For the second portion, participants will travel to Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area, a highly diverse bird spot in WI and the largest cattail marsh in the US, where Jeff will lead a tour of Horicon’s duck ‘hot spots’ and highlight duck species identification techniques in the field.
The field portion on March 8 will be held entirely outdoors. It will involve walking and standing on grassy or graveled trails. Be sure to dress for the weather and in layers. Wear suitable walking or hiking shoes.
Transportation to Horicon Marsh will NOT be provided by Riveredge. Participants will meet at the Horicon Marsh Education Center at 7:45 am on March 8, prepare (use bathrooms, etc.) and then leave for the walk at 8:00 am. Punctual arrival is important as it may be difficult to find the group once the walk has begun.

Polar Exploration Lecture with Eric Larsen: On Thin Ice
@ Ozaukee Pavilion at the County Fair Grounds in Cedarburg
Experience the life of modern day explorer and Cedarburg native Eric Larsen as he shares stories from 25 years of extreme expeditions – from the North and South Poles to the top of Mt. Everest and many places in between. Through stunning images and video learn about encounters with polar bears, extreme cold, thin ice, avalanches, and much more. Eric will share anecdotes from his many adventures across the globe (including Wisconsin) as well as an unsupported expedition to the North Pole that will most likely be the last of its kind in history due to climate change that was featured in a documentary on the Discovery Network and book On Thin Ice. The presentation uses bigger themes of teamwork, risk, uncertainty and more to highlight what we all can do to overcome big challenges while expanding environmental awareness into the future. He will also talk about his recent battle with stage 3b colorectal cancer and the pivotal role that southeastern Wisconsin and Riveredge Nature Center played in his life.
Eric has dedicated his adult life to sharing his love for the outdoor world with others. As an educator, he strives to connect people to places and issues. Originally from Cedarburg, Wisconsin, Eric now lives in Crested Butte, Colorado with his wife Maria and two young children Merritt (10) and Ellie (7). Eric’s father, Andy Larsen, was Riveredge’s first naturalist and founding environmental educator.
All proceeds from this event will benefit Riveredge Nature Center.
