Community Conservation: Buckthorn Removal

March 13 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Community Conservation: Buckthorn Removal

Join Riveredge’s conservation staff as we remove invasive buckthorn at Mayhew Woods. Buckthorn removal is one of the most important steps for restoring the land around us. Because of the expansive reach this plant has, the forest floor under the buckthorn is almost entirely bare. Removing buckthorn in the winter allows our team to spend less time managing the plant in the spring and summer, instead working to reintroduce native species in the newly cleared area!

If you’re looking for an opportunity to get outside and participate in local conservation efforts, you’ve come to the right place! Please dress for the elements and prepare to hike off trail. Tools and PPE provided.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate. (students ages 16+ also welcome with supervising teacher -please call us to inquire)
Pre-registration is required by March 12 at 11:59 pm as space is limited. Please reach out to Hannah hsedgwick@riveredge.us with any questions.

Great Lakes Bioblitz BEGINS

Riveredge is excited to support the Wisconsin Sea Grant’s Annual Great Lakes Bioblitz! This Bioblitz starts on April 22nd, Earth Day, and runs through May 20th.

Let’s do the ‘Blitz in the Basin! What’s blooming, flying, hopping, or maybe just growing around you? This spring, join us on the iNaturalist App to post your observations of wild living things.

The annual Sea Grant Great Lakes BioBlitz begins every year on Earth Day and ends four weeks later.

Anyone in U.S. States & Canadian provinces within (or adjacent to) the Great Lakes Basin is welcome to be a part of the Great Lakes BioBlitz!

What is a BioBlitz? A BioBlitz is an event to observe, identify, and record as many different, non-domesticated species as possible in a given area over a set period of time.

Please remember to be kind to nature and stay on trail when making your BioBlitz observations!
