~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Experts from Midwest Environmental Advocates and the Center for Water Policy at UW-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences will join Director John Rakowski in a discussion about the environmental impacts of data centers.  The Center for Water Policy will share their research on data center water consumption, electricity use, and public project transparency on a national level. Midwest Environmental Advocates will review water and transmission line information about the recently approved Port Washington data center. The speakers will focus on facts, the need for transparency, and keeping the public informed. This panel will help us all learn more about the environmental impacts of proposed data centers in Wisconsin. There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and learn how to get involved in community feedback regarding data center projects.
FAQ:
What ages is this camp for?
Winter camp is for campers aged 6-12. Once we have all our campers signed up, they will be divided into groups based on age, so you can be assured your child will be placed with an age-appropriate group!
What do campers need to bring?
Once you’re signed up, you’ll get a full packet of info with everything you’ll need to know closer to the start of camp. But basically, enough layers and gear to be appropriately dressed for winter weather and a lunch. We’ll provide all the fun!
What time is camp?
Camp is always held in December, from 9 AM to 4 PM each day. Campers will need to be transported to and from Riveredge at those times each day. Final day overnight option will have a 9am pickup the following morning.
Do I have to sign up ahead of time?
Yes, please! Pre-registration is required and Winter Camp enrollment is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first served basis, so be sure to register as soon as possible!
What’s the cost?
2024 prices are $135 for members, $150 for non-members, and $40 to add on the Friday overnight option. Not yet a member? Sign up here for discounts on camps, programs, special events, and much more!
Have more than one child interested in attending camp? We offer a multiple child discount!  First registration is full price and each additional child will receive 10% off. Camperships are available to assist families in need. Contact Steff Merten to apply for this financial assistance.
Any other questions?
We’re happy to help answer them! Give our camp coordinator, Steff Merten, a call at 262-375-2715 or contact her by email at smerten@riveredge.us
The Moon: Earth’s Natural Satellite
November 7 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
The Moon: Earth’s Natural Satellite
Planet Earth has just one natural satellite – an oddity in our solar system. Explore the origins of the Moon and humanity’s evolving relationship with it. Jim Hahn will teach us about the Moon’s features, phases, myths, and lore. We’ll be indoors, but if weather permits, we’ll view the Moon outside through telescopes, so please dress warmly.
Jim Hahn is a lifelong amateur astronomer who learned the constellations at eight years old and built a telescope at fifteen. When the sky is not dark and clear, he writes software, rides his bike, and sings in two choirs. Jim is an active member of the Northern Cross Science Foundation, a local astronomy club dedicated to public outreach, and stays current in astronomy by reading books, magazines, and websites on the topic.
This program is for all ages! Youth must be accompanied by an adult.
Members*: $5/person | Non-members: $10/person
Pre-registration is not required, but highly recommended as there is limited space.
The Milky Way: The Galaxy We Call Home
September 24 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
The Milky Way: The Galaxy We Call Home
Please note this event has been cancelled. Our apologies!
Jim Hahn will give a presentation entitled, “The Milky Way: The Galaxy We Call Home.” Among the questions we will answer: What would it be like to live near the center of our galaxy? What would we find there? Is our galaxy typical? We’ll get up to date on the many discoveries about our galaxy in the last few years. After our program indoors, we will head outside to look through telescopes at the wonders of the Milky Way. Please dress warmly.
